PERFORMANCE
HALO
Project HALO is a series of performances immersing into the world of traditional culture of northern peoples. Yakut identity, intertwining extremes, creates a mystical halo around itself. The natural phenomenon "Halo", reinterpreted with the help of visual programming, in synergy with the rhythms passed through a mathematical algorithm — reflect the atmosphere of the northern peoples' everyday life. Intertwining the natural and traditional, using modern technologies, the viewer is given the opportunity to feel a part of the mesmerizing Yakutia.

In the project I touch upon a theme that goes back to my childhood spent in Yakutia. In my childhood, when I had to travel every day at temperatures below − 40℃, zero visibility, and in dense white fog, my imagination transformed audible sounds into abstract images that played their minimalistic scenes on a silent white stage. Working on the musical part, I use synthesis and processing to mimic natural sounds. Carefully selected, they convey those feelings from my childhood.

Audiovisual performance "MYYS" (in Yakut language means "ice"). The performance explores the processes of transformation. In the center of the composition is a fragment of ice, gradually melting under the influence of the environment. The ice becomes both a musical instrument and a visual metaphor of change, the elusive temporality and fragility of nature. Each drop of water falling from the melting ice is transformed into sound and creates a dynamic soundscape composition.

The idea of using ice as a musical instrument came to me a few years ago when I was experimenting with various sensors and transducers. In my search for unique sounds, I turned my attention to the process of ice melting, which allowed me to capture a variety of natural rhythmic patterns.

I did not return to this project until 2024. It took me almost a month to prepare: I chose the best ways to freeze the ice, created the molds and developed a special container for the drops, to which I connected a piezo sensor to record the sound.

In this performance, I acted as the lighting designer, controlling it through TouchDesigner. This allowed me to combine manual control with algorithms that mimicked the rhythmic patterns of the drops.

A particularly successful solution was the use of powerful ARRI lights: at certain points in the concert, I directed them at the ice, speeding up the melting process. The drops started falling faster, creating new rhythms that complemented the sound of the performance.

We performed at a private event at Planetarium N1. The multi-level logic of the performance patch was specially created for full-dome projection. The unique acoustic features of the planetarium hall created natural reverberations and unusually transformed the sound.

HALO project at Anna Osipova’s exhibition at Beriozka Gallery. On a 250×250 cm canvas "Kergen" (in Yakut language means "family") was projected procedural generative graphics created on the basis of algorithms taken and recycled from nature.

Yana Baty, a virtuoso performer on the khomus, participated in the project. She performed the rarest excerpts of the small peoples of the North (eskimos and chukchi), these songs can be heard only in the far north in remote regions of Russia.

I never travel without a mission. This time I combined my visit to Yakutsk with an event dedicated to the culture of Sakha Republic, Yakutia.

Together with scientists and doctors of sciences from the Institute for Humanities Research and Indigenous Studies of the North of Siberian branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Arctic State Institute of Culture and Arts we held an event where I showed my new work "Halo Uraha".

Video projection on the walls of the sacral Yakut structure Uraha, interacting with live performance on the khomus, gave the result I needed. In the center of the composition is Choroon — a symbol of abundance, happiness and wealth.

Shamanic rhythms created with the help of a mathematical sequencer according to the Euclidian principle, in synergy with visual programming of the "Halo" effect, immerse into the world of traditional culture of northern peoples, creating an alternative reality. In this work, a dream to work with Yakut motifs came true. Collaboration with Svetlana Budikina inspired me to experiment with the sounds and images of my native land. Wind noise, birdsong, footsteps on snow were recreated through the generation and change of electronic sounds. Svetlana played the khomus, creating sounds that merge with birdsong, the whisper of a shaman and the clatter of hooves.

At the opening of the solo exhibition of artist Anna Osipova at the Erarta Museum of Modern Art, our joint performance dedicated to her monumental triptych Umai was presented.

Umai is a highly honored earthly female deity, a benevolent spirit, the most ancient female deity of Turkic and Mongolian peoples. Among modern peoples is known in the Altai, Bashkirs, Buryats, Kazakhs, Kyrgyz, Mongols, Tatars, Khakasses.

With the help of animation graphics and video mapping the picture will allow you to plunge into the deep world of the history of the epic and the world of the artist.

An ancient Yakut song-prayer dedicated to peace on earth, performed by Svetlana Budikina, was used as a musical accompaniment.
